Consumed is a cinematic voyage revealing the incredible stories behind the objects that we all have in our homes, yet know next to nothing about.
The emergence of a globalised consumer economy has given us more choice than generations before could have ever dreamed of. Whilst we might think of our consumption habits as a reflection of our individual needs, desires, they are far from personal. In an ever changing world, and when multiplied thousands or millions of times across the globe, our purchasing habits begin to have drastic consequences for those on the other side of the globe.
In the past two decades, China has become the world’s biggest exporter, and has defined itself as the supplier of the world’s wants. From mid-ocean shipping lanes, industrial ports, busy factories, isolated mines, toxic lakes, endless wholesale markets, and entire cities in construction, ‘Consumed’ follows the complex trajectories of supply chains in an attempt to uncover the extraordinary narratives embodied in the everyday objects that surround us, whether we think about their creation or not.
This a story that we are all a part of; a silent conversation between the consumer and the consumed.
